The Reefscapers' initiative is a synergy between the tourism industry, reef science and the local community around coral propagation projects. The resorts wishing to carry out a reefscaping project, receives advice from Seamarc, a Maldivian consultancy of reef scientists specialised in designing reefs, to achieve a defined goal. Following an on-site survey, choices of sites, design and schedule are included in a project plan. Considering the specific needs of coral trays in terms of design and quantity, Seamarc launches the production of the structures on Fulhadhoo, a local island where a production unit is employed to prepare the modules. To further develop a project, the resort may choose to enter a sponsoring program to propose dedicated reefs to their guests. A biologist enables the guided visit of the project, improving greatly guest experience and helping to spread environmental awareness, as well as enhance the sponsoring effort. The monitoring of the artificial reefs can be carried out either by Seamarc or the resort marine biologist, after an initial training as is most convenient. This enables the display of the progress in our online corabase. |
