World wide Protection of coral reefs from global climate changes and overexploitation is clearly dependent on international cooperation. However, the management of the more localized threat, and in part overexploitation can only be dealt with at he national and local levels. In Maldives, an abundant legislation has already been voted and is many species have special protection status. It seems that enforcement is difficult, given the nature of the country and the enormous resources that enforcement would necessitate. Rather, the country is trying to educate its population and implementation o community based management. The different entities responsible for coral reef protection are:
  • Ministry of Environment, Energy and Water
  • Ministry of Planning and National Development
  • Ministry of Fisheries, Agriculture and Marine Resources
  • Ministry of Atolls Development - International Organisation (i.e. UNDP) and NGOs
  • Private consultants & Tourist resorts
